When Mitch Bengtson clinched his title with a second-period pin in the Big Lake Invitational on Friday evening, a large banner said it all.
“Congratulations Mitch on 142 consecutive wins, new state record.”
Needing six wins at the start of the prep wrestling season, the St. Cloud Apollo junior did it impressively, pinning all three of his opponents Friday to surpass the mark of 141 set by Bloomington Kennedy’s Marcus LeVesseur in 2001.
“There was pressure,” Bengtson said. “But a lot of it was me wanting to hold that record ...
“It feels good.”
It was another achievement for the most decorated high school wrestler in the city’s history.
Already a three-time state champion, the quiet junior is attempting to join a group of 15 wrestlers in the state’s history to win four state championships. Four have won five state titles. Bengtson could be the fifth.
