Since the expansion to a third class, no 1A school had won four straight. Staples won six straight (1980-1985) in the lower division of the two class format.
Anticipation ran high as the defending champs and their top challengers in all three classes were set to meet Thursday evening.
Since Simley moved down from Class 3A in 2008, the Spartans have won all five Class 2A team championships. The defending champs will be shooting for their 10th overall title.
