Led by Eddie Beeninga, Camden Heide and an improved defense, the Trojans crushed the Hornets and seem poised to shoulder the weight of being a Class 4A contender this season.

Wayzata stumbled under the weight of great expectations last season. But the Trojans, after whipping Lake Conference foe Edina 82-64 on Tuesday night, have left little doubt that they are prepared to stand tall under similar expectations this season.

Three players scored 20 or more points and Wayzata, which is second in the Minnesota Basketball News Class 4A rankings, held a comfortable lead for most of the game in a victory over a No. 10-4A Edina squad that handed the Trojans two of their 17 losses last season.

“I think a healthy Cam Heide makes a world of difference,” Edina coach Joe Berger said.

First report

Each time Edina muscled its way back into the game, Wayzata's Eddie Beeninga was there to close the door.

Beeninga scored 23 points and played a key role in stopping a couple of Edina runs in the second half as the Trojans beat their Lake Conference foe 82-64 Tuesday night at Wayzata.

Camden Heide added 21 points and 10 rebounds and Carter Bjerke had 20 points and 10 rebounds to help the Trojans, No. 2 in the Minnesota Basketball News Class 4A rankings, improve to 3-1 overall and 2-1 in the Lake Conference. The No. 10-4A Hornets (3-1, 2-1) saw their season-opening three-game winning streak come to an end.

Beeninga made two free throws and a driving layup to cap a six-point run after Edina scored the first four points of the second half to cut the Trojans' lead to 36-32. After Edina pulled within 10 at 56-46, it was Beeninga's three-pointer that halted the Hornets' charge. And the 6-1 senior guard's three-point play with less than two minutes remaining slammed the door on Edina and left Wayzata with a 77-57 lead.

Junior guard Gabe Jobe and junior forward Brady Helgren each scored 20 points for Edina. Junior guard Sammy Presthus, the Hornets' leading scorer through the first three games, was held to nine points.
